I had a dream... the return of the traditional village high street with the butcher, the baker, the greengrocers and even the fishmongers….
I decided to see if I could make it a reality... I saved like crazy (to get used to living on one income), then gave up my job, made my husband sell his car (!) and with the additional help of some very supportive family and friends, set about finding suppliers and customers who could make each other happy.
Except I needed a way of getting the food to all the customers that didn’t require a fixed retail outlet with all the associated running costs or driving vans all over the place to people’s homes. Instead I decided to see if I could persuade existing village businesses to effectively turn themselves into the local farm shop for 2 or 3 hours a week by agreeing to act as community collection points. To my delight the idea of supplying local food to local people was not a hard concept to sell.
How to do it and cover costs is a long story but I came up with the idea of asking customers to subscribe to the service for a nominal fee of £10 per year to help fund the cost of providing the service, in particular the returnable delivery crates and cool bags.
I hope you share my dream. It’s up to you now to make it a reality.
